Honestly it all starts at home as a kid. My family would not and still dont eat anything besides the staple foods. They eat as a means of nourishment instead of enjoyment. You eat till your full and as long as its not foul who cares.

Same thing goes for beer drinking. Some people drink it as a means to get loaded and don’t care if there are other options because their comfort zone is a nice place to be.

Most people by us dont like change and once you introduce it you’re a snob and “why cant you just do what works”

Clown Shoes — maybe the best name for a beer since . . . I don’t know . . . forever. Glad you guys liked it. I’m sure it’s a beer I’ll never taste unless I did the red eye out to Pittsburgh (tempting).

Interesting conversation you guys had about what you would and would not eat or drink. I’ve been talking with Rachael Oehring about her project “Gagging Towards Bethlehem” who is raising money for a book project she’s working on to go to the core of why she can’t stand certain foods. She’s been notoriously picky about what she eats. I will be having a phone interview with her next month and I’m going to ask a ton of questions, because I’m interested.

Is it cultural? Are we picky about what we eat because we weren’t forced to eat certain things as children and now that we’re adults no one can tell us what to eat? Or are we just not adventurous enough? Here’s Sick Puppy about to eat Durian — hats off to you, brother. I see food as a challenge. I’ll eat anything now. If people in villages are living off of grubs, and they’re not puking their guts out, then it must be OK to eat grubs.

The way I see it – if it’s dumber than me, slower than me, and tastes relatively decent – pass the salt, bitches.

Good example of the English style IPA .. perhaps the best I’ve had.

I never said I didn’t know about the proposal, just that its not a recognized BJCP style

I would rather see styles brewed to BJCP guidelines, otherwise you wind up with beers with no style at all, and the flavors are all ‘muddied’. I could give you an example of a Pa. brewpub, but will hold my tongue. Yes, there will always be those that push the envelope .. that’s fine by me. There are also styles that are “catch all” styles; e.g. “American Strong Ale” Lots of breweries wind up entering their brews into different categories, so that they more closely match up to the BJCP guidelines.

As for Black IPA’s, yinzers are behind the times. In the latest Brew Your Own mag, a proposal has been sent to BJCP and GABF people proposing guidelines for just such a beer. The name Cascadian Ale has been bantered about, as well as Black IPA. I expect it to be accepted, as those leading the charge on it are pretty heavy hitters (Charlie Papazian). Also, quite a few breweries are now making Black IPAs.

Maybe I’ll make a quick run to Boardman and buy out all the Meantime stuff .. just to be MEAN this TIME.

Black IPA isn’t a recognized style either but I still drink it. I really don’t give a shit if its BJCP or not unless it claims to meet the guidelines and even then so what, if its good beer then drink it.

I look at BJCP like this. They’re guidelines, not a policy. They’re for people who want to learn about a style. For people like me who have tossed around the idea of home brewing they’re a great way to get started, after that get as creative as you like.

As far as the BJCP goes, who cares? I think it’s a great way to define beer styles but I never understood those who define their recipes by the definition of what it should be. If this was the standard rule, we would not have most of the great craft beers produced today. I for one, prefer to draw outside the lines and put creativity and a personal stamp on my brews. Not to take away from BJCP definition only brewers, I respect that. Just don’t follow that path myself.

You begin to wonder how many more trips to various countries you can make before you start to run out of material, but that certainly hasn’t slowed down hosts like Bourdain or Zimmern, so I think Zane has a lot of gas left in his tank, and a never-ending supply of creative ideas. Great to see that he’s working with Travel Channel to make something exciting happen. We’ll all have to give them feedback to encourage them to sign him up for new shows.

I love Meantime, and have had several of their beers. Their London Porter was fantastic – nice and roasty with a smooth chocolate finish. And Bill is correct – London Porter is not a BJCP style. I think they’re only referring to their porter in the same way we refer to our Pacific-brewed IPA’s as “Imperial” or “West Coast.” Doesn’t change the fact that the beer ROCKS, though.

Sounds like Erie Brewing is really putting its foot forward this year. As for a Sickpuppy brew, I vote for a Baltic Porter. I have a *great* version of one here (if I don’t say so myself … but actually many of my friends have said its great). I can give you a recipe if you want.

I’ve been to Main Street Brewing, for the ‘Frozen Falls’ brewfest. Pretty small place – you have to go outside to change your mind. I hope the brews have improved since then.

Bottling my DIPA this weekend. Can’t wait for it to carbonate, because it is fantastic (I’ve had samples). I’m entering this one in my home brew club event in Aug.

Looking forward to a bigger and better “Beer On the Bay”. After The Big Tap In, it may seem anti-climatic, but you just can’t beat that venue.

Phill sounds like a great guy, and he’s running a top notch operation there at Vintage Estate. Love that they’re the #1 beer store in the world. I’ve been to places I would consider “Beer Heaven” many times, but this sounds like the holy grail.

Never have warmed up to mead. Tried a wide variety of them, and none have ever done it for me. Beer/Wine I can totally do. But mead is not for me. I do appreciate that homebrewers and professional brewers are so into it. It has to be the respect they have for the history of brewing.

It was so funny when you guys said that every time you see VE, you think “Vertical Epic” because that was EXACTLY what I thought when I saw it. Then again when I saw it the second time.

I think puppy should focus on getting the Pizza Beer brewed first

I’m really happy that you guys enjoyed Patrick’s beers as much as I have these past couple of years. I rarely ever gush about a brewery, and I didn’t gush about this one purely because they’re an OC brewery. I gushed because the beer was unique, and that both Patrick and Rachael are so incredibly nice and unassuming.

In the 2 years since they hit the market, their popularity has skyrocketed, and now they’re looking to expand to a larger area in downtown Placentia. It looks good for them, and I hope this expansion helps them distribute their beer further out to the East coast. It will help me save on shipping, for one thing.

Regarding the Durian beer – not sure that’s a great idea. Even though Durian has a flavor of warm custard, and it’s palatable on it’s own, it more than likely would result in a very unpleasant beer (not to mention cloudy, since the fruit itself would more than likely produce a milky substance when juiced). But it’s a novel thought. I’m sure no one’s tried it, so Sick – you may just be the first one to hit the streets with that. Will cost you plenty, though. For the amount of fruit you’d need, I could see you spending $40 easily.

Also, I’m with Bill. Not sure you can easily find malts roasted higher than 500 Lovibond. Also, not sure what more you’d get from a malt roasted harder than that, other than some extreme bitterness that you may not want any part of (unless you planned on aging for a year or longer).

Spoon, my eyes/vision are better than yours. I work on electronic parts so small they have to be picked up with jeweler’s tweezers. You theory that my vision is poor has more holes in it than a Goth chick’s tongue!

SP – Only thing I can see in the 600L range is Weyermann Carafa .. which is listed as 500L to 600L. In usage, probably the same as using debittered BP … a little goes a long way. Might be good in a ‘Sublimely Self-Righteous’ clone.

Bill, There is indeed a 600 lovibond roasted black malt, just ’cause you haven’ t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist! I for one (as a sickpuppy) rather enjoyed the yeast story!

Sick Puppy … don’t believe I’ve ever seen any 600 lovibond malt. Highest I’ve seen is 500L for Black Patent malt. 200L is typically light chocolate malt, with normal chocolate malt about 350L. Base malts start around 1.5L for pilsner malt and go up from there. Color, Crystal and Roasted malts are all much higher than the base malts. Doesn’t take much. 3 OUNCES of Black Patent in your mash will give you a nice red color (so you don’t have to use red food dye like Killians).

Spoon, the yeast story was disgusting … do you drink with that mouth too?

I put the Drunk line on my cell. Maybe I’ll use it this weekend while at the BrewErie Fest. My one buddy who usually is trashed in the 1st 20 minutes of any fest isn’t going with us this time .. he’d be a riot to put on your ‘drunk line’.

Drew does have a great vibe to his place and makes some great irish dishes but he coves the whole british Isles. I know the whole north and south Ireland and who likes to be called what (we had some serious issues on what we were going to call this show, considered Beers of the Irish Isles just to see who we could piss off).

All you need to know is that Piper’s Pub is a great bar. English, Irish, Scottish… you’re all welcome. Stop down for a football match (soccer, whatev) and celebrate your heritage.

I am flat out addicted to the shepherds pie and scotch eggs. I highly recommend these menu items to anyone going there for the first time! Drew and his staff really are top notch and I don’t think we can stress that enough. This is truly one of the great places in Pittsburgh to visit and must be a craft beer destination.

Drew’s running a pretty sweet operation. I love Irish pubs. We’ve got our fair share out here too, but they seem to get more authentic, the further East of here you go. Sounds like Pipers Pub has the look and feel of being in Ireland (minus the fighting).

Ploughman’s Lunch is one of my favorite go-to meals when I don’t know what I want, or don’t feel like cooking. We always keep cheese around, my homemade pickles, hard boiled eggs, and a nice thick slice of crusty bread. That and a pint of lager and I’m set.

Loved listening to you guys mowing down food. Sounds like a true gastronomic gem. The pictures are great too.

We’d like to do more shows than once a month right now but the problem is personal time. Sickpuppy has been working 80 hour weeks at his new business and I’m working plus married with a 1yr old. Once things level out in the next few months we’ll be doing more shows.

When we started this we would just turn on a mic and run with it but now we have a process and try to get interviews lined up. Once we finish recording we have a show out in 3 days (aim for Wednesdays). that gives us time to edit, get pics posted and write show notes. While our shows are generally under 60 minutes with 4-5 beers reviewed we actually record for up to 3-4 hours and publish the best stuff. Picking what to keep is the hard part since we talk about a lot of things.

I’ll be moving this summer and plan on having a dedicated recording area in my new house which will hopefully streamline the process.

Love your show, it is the kind of thing I would like ours to be if I had production skills, knew more about beer, or cared enough to prepare for or edit our show. You want to be huge? Offer a coffee shop type setting that serves beer. Make it a classy man cave that women aren’t pushed off from because of sports shit everywhere. Offer wi-fi and have some snazzy TV’s. People want a beverage, read a paper, chill and shoot the shit while also having the option to stop in to grab a 6pack and leave.

Phil, sour beers aren’t for me. I’ve come to accept that and I’m cool with it. I really wish that we could have reviewed Bills beers earlier but unfortunately it was a case of circumstance. If we know that beers may be pushing the life cycle i may just take them and review on Hump Day Happiness.

Hutch, We would like to do more video but unfortunately the time hasn’t been available for both of us at the same time. We’re talking about doing a Ustream show soon but I would like a technology that we could conference in others. Kinda like a Talkshoe but for video. Robert Downey Jr. actually received both a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for his performance in Tropic Thunder. I know Sick Puppy hates Hollywood, pop culture, and most anything mainstream, but I agree with Spoon — great movie.

Sorry you didn’t care for the Brabant, Spoon. It’s been said many times before, but it bears repeating – sour beers are not for everyone. And if you haven’t warmed up to them by now, you’re probably never going to. I loved Brabant, but Avery’s second offering, Sui Generis Barrel-Aged Sour Ale, was even better. Rick is a really great guy, and it’s nice of him to offer beers to us that we’d have no way of tasting otherwise.

Shame you sat on Madison Bill’s beers as long as you did. Some beers don’t have a super long shelf life. IPAs are one of those, along with wheat beers, etc. I’m sure when they were fresh, they were even better.

I love when Spoon has beergasms over beers he likes. It’s my favorite part of your show.

For the style it was a bit off but very enjoyable. Would I drink it while tailgating, watching my hottie neighbor wash her mustang or mowing my lawn? Absolutely. Would I buy a case? not a chance. It was $28 at Save on Beer in Mars and for a couple dollars more I got the Victory variety pack.

I really think that this needs to go up for a blind tasking because some people will be really surprised. If you’re a beer geek going in knowing you’re drinking it you’ve already made your mind up it sucks. Me, I try everything and give it a fair shot. We’ve caught some hell because we liked the Pizza beer. Neither one of us thought it would be good and turned out we loved it.

It was a no brainer that we would do 2 sessions when the first one was winding down and we had only hit 1/2 the ppl we wanted to. Thing is that when we do these fests we really don’t get to drink that much because we’re always busy talking.

Pantius Droppus was incredible and not because Jill (I think that was her name) was doing a fantastic job selling and modeling it Rust Belt was the huge surprise for us since we’ve heard they were around but haven’t seen them. I’m trying to find some time that I can go up and visit the place.

Because of my new job my weekends are pretty much booked until the Spring but if sickpup is available I think he should enter. His beers are incredible.

Well, you finally got a Dark Lord … one up on me guys, but I don’t think it can be much better than some
of the other RIS-es that I’ve had, especially ones from Stone and Great Lakes. I might even brew one
shortly, and leave it in the secondary for a good long time, then bottle it and have it ready for this Fall or
Winter. If I had a choice, I think I’d opt for a “Kate The Great” rather than a Dark Lord anyway. So, keep
you eyes open for that one … would make a good brew for your 4th anniversary show.

Phil, I loved Dom. Being a Smokey and the Bandit fan of course I think Smokey 2 was his best role but I can’t let Cannonball Run go without a thumbs up. He always came across as a really fun guy to be around.

Bill, right now we’re planning on attending the afternoon BOTB 2 this summer. That weekend is hella busy for me in Erie so I’m going to unleash sickpuppy unsupervised on the city while I attend to a couple functions. Teaspoon has already unleashed his fury on the I/O and it isnt pretty.

Here is my view on Mexican beers since this show. Outside of North America some people think Miller, Bud and Coors represent American beer when you and I both know of the multitude of breweries and styles. I think this is what’s happening to Mexico. There are probably good breweries down there, we just don’t know of them on this side of the country because of the commercialization of dos equis, Brahma and that urine sample Corona.

Just wait for part 2 of this… we have a special guest stopping in for the first time since we started.

After I bottle my Am. Amber, I’m thinking of doing a Stone IRS clone of my own making. It will be an AG
affair, using my 70 Qt. mash tun, and 30 lbs of grain. Going for 1st runnings only with an OG around
1.095. It would be ready for Fall consumption, for sure.

Madison Bill

Now that he’s “up there” my mother is undoubtedly in stitches again. She loved Dom. He epitomized the Italian/American for her. When I was in college, I made it a point to visit my mother every Tuesday for a “movie night.” I would pick up Chinese food, pizza, whatever, stop at the video store, and rent a movie for us to watch after dinner. Once I rented “Fatso” and it became our favorite movie to watch together. We’d see it more than any other. I think we may have seen it 12 times together. And she laughed just as hard every time, as if she was watching it for the first time ever.

Dom loved his food, his wine, and his friends equally as much as he loved his family – and that’s saying something. I have both of his “Eat This, it will make you feel better” cookbooks on my cookbook rack. His Grandmother’s Sunday Gravy is in there, and it’s worth the price of admission, trust me.

Those recipes do truly make you feel better, and I think we all need that now more than ever.

So even knowing that the Cordillera Blanca was BA “C” beer, I felt pretty good knowing that you would give it an honest evaluation and take it for what it’s worth. And after all, who is making an A or B White Chocolate Ale these days???

Sonoran is not my favorite brewery here, but they have made a unique beer and they should be recognized for it.

Gimme a shout if you get out to the AZ. I’ll be out in your area sometime in the next year, so we’ll have to tip a few.

Last time I was in Pittsburgh was a while ago, and I did visit the Foundry Aleworks (and loved it) – and you’d mentioned it was reincarnated – as what?

Keep up the good work (I still tell my beer geek friends you guys were the ones who turned me on to Shmaltz Brewing).

Wow, glad i didn’t pack up in Pittsburgh and make that bottle shop in Erie. Sounds like Wegmans has a good start to the selection Erie deserves. Erie has so much potential to be a great craft beer destination but I’ll save that for a show someday.

I would really like to try some of these homebrews I keep hearing about from this competition. Chris emailed me today about some upcoming events so i need to get back to him. yeah I wont be doing anything SIDT for awhile but Puppy has all of that under control and we have some great friends stepping in for me. There are a few more shows in the can already so you wont be seeing a gap like before. Then again we didn’t expect teaspoon to be 8 weeks early either

Listening to the cast as I type this, but figured I’d start my feedback while I listen.

First off, I was at Wegman’s in Erie this past weekend. I made a special stop there
to check it out on my way to the Home Brew Off fest being held at the BrewErie.
More on the Home Brew fest later, but I’ll give you the skinny on Wegman’s. I
thought it was really a kick-ass selection! The do have it towards the end of the
store where the cafe is, and have dedicated checkouts for purchases made there.
I didn’t find it obtrusive or weird, or uncomfortable. It’s set up in sort of a square
area. They have a 3 sided shelf system which sort of encloses it (with the checkout
occupying the 4th side). Inside the area are several rows of shelves, loaded with
lots of craft brews, a good selection of imports, and even a few macros (A.B.’s Ale
was there!). Lot of familiar names: Great Lakes, Southern Tier, Victory, Weyerbacher,
Lancaster, Boston Brewing, Brooklyn Brewing, etc. They also had some craft brews
that I’d not seen elsewhere, so I walked out with a couple bombers from Green Flash
(CA.); the Belgian and the IPA. My buddy bought an Ommegang 3 Philosophers and
a Unibroue La Fin Du Mond. I would have like to have spent more time there, but we
were on our way to the Home Brew Fest, so cut it kind of short. I’ll definitely be going
back. BTW Voodoo has really good exposure in the store.

The Home Brew fest was great! There were about 25 brews there, and they had 4
awards: Runner-Up & 1st “People’s Choice”, and Runner-Up & 1st “Judges”. The judges
were Matt from Voodoo, Gary from BrewErie, Sean from Erie Brewing, and ??? from the
Blue Canoe. I didn’t enter, but did bring a couple samples to get feedback from the
judges and some of the homebrewers. I brought my “Conundrum IPA” (7.5% / 75 IBU),
and my “London Porter”. Both were well received by the judges and the few who also
got to sample. Pete (Chris’ dad) asked me “Why didn’t you enter this? I’d definitely buy
it!” So, I’ll definitely be entering one or 2 brews in next year’s event.

Sick Puppy, I’ll have to check out your homebrew podcast. I just got in my supply of hops
for this year from Freshops.com. I got Cascades, Willamette, Perle, Magnum & Zeus (a
Columbus clone). Will be doing my 1st AG brew sometime soon … probably will do an
American Amber.

Cheers to Spoon, and the little ‘teaspoon’. Your life has changed forever. However, since
teaspoon made his appearance early, you can go to the BrewErie Microbrew Fest on Apr. 18th.
I’ll be there, 1st session, along with a whole bunch of road dogs.

Phil, that was a rough show. I’ve never had in between tasting Mead. Either it’s good or it sucks. If puppy would have heated the one up and added the spices he might have gotten a boot to the head.

Whoever it was who said “Chloroseptic” was bang on with the last sour lambic you had. I brewed a Flanders Red once and just before it started to turn into a sour brown, it hit the “Chloroseptic” end of the rectum (spectrum) and it was really hard to handle. Some need to age longer than others.

You really do drink it so we don’t have to.

Spoon, the next time you’re in a restaurant that serves fresh oysters (best between September and December), do yourself a favor and try them. Get past the texture, get to the flavor. They taste like the sea, and it’s the true taste of seafood. Try one plain, then another with a little horseradish, maybe another with a squirt of lemon, or a spritz of hot sauce. They are fantastic. I know a lot of people (my wife included) will not ever try eating these because of the texture. But if you’re a fan of fresh seafood, really fresh, in-season oysters are the sea’s gift to you.

But if you’re not interested, you’re just not interested. I ate my first one on a dare, and I loved it. I’ve been hooked ever since. If you don’t want to eat them raw, but still want to experience the flavor of them, I ate one of the best fried oyster sandwiches in my life right there in your town. The Original Oyster House on Market Square in Pittsburgh is a greasy hole-in-the-wall that made one of my most memorable oyster experiences. I washed the sandwich down with a cold PBR, and enjoyed every last bite.

Oh, and regarding wings – gotta agree with what you said about Hooters. I don’t know what made their wings so popular, but I’ve tried every variation on their menu and they pale in comparison to what you can do at home or what you get when you go to Frank’s in NY. But put the word “Extreme”, “Inferno” or “Habanero” next to something and people immediately flock to it. Bunch of lambs. They tasted old to me, but the boobs are nice to look at, for what that’s worth.

And don’t cook with bad beer. That’s food abuse. Throw the beer out.

hutch – We really try to keep shows at the most 1hr but we figured since it’s Christmas, wtf, why not. Onorato is a joke. You can bet that if he runs for governor of this state you’re gonna see the end of existence because his head would explode from being all pumped up. At some point we need to stop jagoffs like him from making it higher in the political food chain.

Jason, that sounds like the greatest festival of all time!

And its sad about Penn Brewing… I hope they find a place in Pittsburgh. Oktoberfest will not be the same with out them.

More sad news about Penn Brewing. After your last show, I emailed my condolences to
Penn Brewing, and it was put up on the company bulletin board. I got a email back from
Len Caric (CEO, I think) thanking me for my support. I sure hope that they can regroup.
I was talking with Pete Siriani (Chris’ dad) and we were both wondering where in the hell
Penn Brewing is going to store all it’s hardware .. fermentors, mash tuns, brew kettles, etc.
How are they going to get them out of the old building? It boggles the mind.

Speaking of Chris Siriani (BrewErie), when I was up there for the International BrewFest
which you guys wimped out on, I mentioned that all of us agreed that Chris needed to
*up* his BrewErie internet profile. He said he’s working on it, and it’s a “New Year’s
resolution thing” that he’s going to attend to. With all the colleges in the area, I told
him he could get some college IT students to do the work cheap.

Both “ya’s” were doing a fine imitation of a PMS rant on the beer tax. Helps to have a
few in ya to get you cranked up.

Oh, while at the aforementioned BrewErie International, I met up with their head brewer
and the head brewer from Main Street Bar & Brewery Co. (Garretsville, OH). I told them
I was going to bring samples of my homebrew ESB and Porter … but forgot in my haste
to get out the door. Virgil (head brewer at Main Street) said they are having their very
first brewfest/tasting sessions 1/31/09. Check out the beer calendar on BA for info. I
will be there with a bunch of buddies, and maybe a couple of my nephews ( I broke them
in right and took them to their 1st brewfests when they hit 21 .. what an uncle I am!).

Still not HUGE on the Belgian style, and certainly not Saisons or Farmhouse ales. However,
there’s a relatively new beer bar in Willoughby, OH. called Ballantine, and a BA bud and
myself have checked it out. They have 29 taps of craft and Belgian brews on tap. Had my
first Chimay White on tap .. freakin’ awesome. They also have Gulden Draak and Piraat
on tap, as well as offerings from Southern Tier, Great Lakes, Bells, DFH, etc. Good place
to hit up if your ever in the area (about 25 miles East of Cleveland).

Well, Merry Christmas to both ya’s. The company I work for just laid off 9 office types, and
will be laying off 20 temps on the 23rd. There might be another 15-20 lay-offs in January,
so maybe I’ll be in the same boat as yoos! (hope not). At any rate, I’ve got lots of home
brew, Penn St. Nick Bock, SA Impy Pils, Victory Hop Wallop, Victory Old Horizontal, and
a variety of Stone bombers to tide me over the holidays. Remember, life’s too short to
drink shitty beer … even when you’re unemployed! (you can always brew good shit!)

Regarding the Belgian Stout that didn’t sit well — I’ve seen them before, but have never actually tasted one. I recently purchased Allagash Belgian Stout for a gift for a friend of mine. Not sure if he’s had it yet, but it will be interesting to hear what he thought. I brewed an experimental beer recently that didn’t come out quite like I wanted. It was a Bavarian Hefeweizen recipe with the addition of chocolate and black patent malt. I think I probably could have left it there, but I decided to hop it with Amarillo and then dry hop it as well. Too hoppy, way too dry, and definitely not what I was going for. This is why I don’t experiment.

Not sure about a bacon beer for this reason. Bacon is good. Beer is good. Maybe some things should just be left how they are.

As for Penn Brewing, that is really unfortunate that their rent increase is that obscenely high. Hopefully they’ll be able to work something out and get back to brewing their own soon. (I have their Kaiser Pils on tap at home right now, and it’s really, really good.) But, since the Lion is the local brewery for me, I’m going to say/hope that the quality shouldn’t change once the Lion gets involved.

Rotten news about Penn Brewing. They brew some great brews. Their Weissens are 1st rate. Their St. Nick
bock is always good at this time of the year .. will have to be sure to pick up a case. Hope that they find a
sweet deal on a new and better place, and that a month after they are all moved out, karma sets fire to
their old digs.

Loved the music – very appropriate. I’m sure you guys will land on your feet with no problem. If nothing else, it’ll leave you guys with more time to podcast, brew beer, and figuring out new ways to entertain us.

Nothing was funnier than listening to Spoon have a mouthgasm over that Mead. Honestly, I think he really liked it. I’ve not had too many meads that turned my head, but it sounds like the T.R.U.B. Gewurz hit the mark.

Penn Brewing is getting a bad deal. Why did they raise their rent 300%? Sounds like they’re getting pushed out of there for one reason or the other.

It’s funny when you started talking about the Christmas video. I had the Terra-Rye’zd beer (Left Hand Brewing / Terrapin collaboration) in my hand heading to the checkout! That would’ve been a little bit of a let down for you, although, your review of it would’ve been well practiced!

Fred was hands down the best interview of the day. The other brewers were great also but there was something about Fred that really stood out. There’s always one at every event. Sickpuppy was hellbent on doing the interview with him. I think Hoppin Frog is good beer but puppy worships it.

If more breweries had people like Jim working for them the sales of craft beer in this country would soar. Until then, drink Erie Brewing

Left you 2 pieces of ‘love’ at the Podcast site and hope you guys do well.

Anytime you guys interview Jim from Erie, it’s always worth a re-listen. This time was no different. No other brewer would say “If you can’t get our beer, get off your ass and talk to your distributor and we’ll send some beer out there and get you FUCKED UP.” He’s hard core, and the fact that he constantly tells Sick that he likes Hard Cock (and not just the beer) cracks me up. Jim’s a riot.

There’s always one standout interview at these fests, and this time it was Fred from Hoppin Frog. He speaks with such passion about his beer, and is so open about the struggles he faces to do what he loves, and the fact that he brews the beer he likes, and hopes others like it too. That’s so vital, and it encompasses everything that makes craft brewing great. It separates micro breweries from the big boys in a big way. This isn’t macro marketing bullshit, this is soul.

Excellent information from Drew about a Firkin. It’s old school and newcomers to real ale may not know much about it. When there was beer, there were Firkins. Besides, it’s fun to say “Get me a Firkin Beer!”

Bill – I would rather drink the Chelada again. just sayin…

Drunken Polack – even if we got a VIP trip/tour of the place and free beer for a year I will never drink this again. Well maybe once to prove the fact it sucks.

Yeah, the Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner is easily as hoppy as a lot of IIPAs (double IPAs). Its BIG, its BRASH,
and its Balanced too. Not a session brew, but great if you’re only having one or 2. Also good as a
session finisher, as it will clean out your palate and tastebuds!

As for the Butternut(s), I would think that after chugging that Clamato Chelada swill, you could handle
anything. Could Butternut possibly be worse than Bud with tomato and clam juice? I don’t think so!

Wow, this was painful to listen to. You torched this brewery. I found it ironic that you had beers from The Good Beer Show on your last episode, followed by some seriously bad beers on this one.

So funny what you said about cartoons on the labels of beer too. Groucho & CHUD stayed away from Fantome Saison because of the stupid ghost on the label, then they had it on my suggestion and loved it. Now they’re wondering how many other great beers they’ve not tried because of what they considered bad labeling.

If I were you, I wouldn’t expect any love letters from Butternut after this one. I hope that maybe you guys just got some bad cans of beer, maybe they got hot at some point or something. I don’t know a lot of breweries that make a bad beer every time. It’s unfortunate in this case, because people would easily blame the fact that it’s in cans, and canned beer is on the rise in craft brewing.

CFF is one of my main fundraisers every year, so it was great to hear you pimping the Brewing Up a Cure event. We do the great strides walk every Spring and raise a ton of money for CF, which is still cutting precious lives short at too great a pace, but thanks to the CFF and events like this, we’re making progress. Cheers to the dudes at TRUB for their hard work.

Bill – Thanks for the heads up on pronunciation! It was a real treat for sure. I was an MTV junkie in the 80′s until all of those freaking shows started taking the place of videos. Now I watch VH1 Classic.

Crappy – yup this is the one we invited you and the Mrs. over for Wait till you see what I brought back from NY. We won’t do another marathon show but could come close!

First off, another good wrap up of the Beer on the Bay event. To be sure, those that missed it,
missed one of the best brewfests going. It will be interesting to see if they can top that next
year, but I don’t see how. I have a few suggestions, which I may pass along to Chris (BrewErie)
or his dad, Pete, next time I’m in Erie.

Westvleteren, eh? A little high class for ‘yoos guys’, what? Never had one myself, and probably,
due to its scarcity, will not be able to enjoy one. BTW, the correct pronunciation, according to
a couple of BJCP judges is: Westvleteren = West VLEE-ter-an (accent 2nd syllable).

Some good brews do come out of Michigan, but I think none of them surpass the consistently
good and wide variety of offerings by Ohio’s Great Lakes Brewing Co., celebrating their 20th
year this year.

I couldn’t appreciate much of your MTV experience, myself. MTV was something that was on the
TV in the cafeteria of Lakeland College, where I got my 2nd degree back in the 80′s (AS. E.T.).
Other than that, I only tuned in for Beavis and Butthead … heh heh … heh heh … buttmunch!

I will be trying a Weyerbacher’s QUAD sometime this week. Hopefully, I’ll have the same orgasmic
experience you both seemed to have when quaffing your Westvleteren.

Looking forward to the release of the Clamato chug to the brilliant strains of Boy George’s “Do you really
want to hurt me?”

There is really no way to properly describe a beer as complex as Westvleteren without sounding like a complete tool. In my opinion, the only person who could do it (and do it well) was Michael Jackson. When you said you tasted and smelled plums, ripe fruit, and other deep candy aromas, that’s about how I’d best describe it too. Beyond that, the beer’s a total mystery to me. Awesome beer to feature on your show.

Oh, and Sick – if you called the monastery and asked them to send you a case of it, they wouldn’t tell you to fuck off. They’d say ” “.

The whole MTV VJ discussion was awesome. Nina Blackwood was the absolute shit, but my favorite was Martha Quinn. She was really cute, spoke well, and lit up the screen whenever she was on it. Those were great days – the early days of MTV. Now it’s a joke.

Riki Rachtman was a douche. He had a talk show out here in LA on KLSX (the same station that carried Howard Stern). The show came to a screeching halt when he beat up his co-host because he’d insulted Rachtman’s girlfriend, who was a porn star. I think he called her a whore or something, and Rachtman reached across the board and punched him in the face. Game over.

And Terri Nunn does look amazing. She was hot early on, but she seems even hotter now. I don’t know how that works. Must be her genes. I mean jeans – she looks good in those too.

I really like Alaskan’s Summer Ale, but not a big fan of the Amber. But I guess leaving it around for nearly a year is the key. I’ll try that next time. Maybe I should buy some more of it and promise to send it to you. Then, sometime next Spring I’ll open the box and drink it myself. That must be the key.

Collaboration Not Litigation is everything that is right with the craft brewing industry. Further proof that great brewers set the standard NOT to be total dicks. Having Avery and Russian River Brewing in the same bottle is the equivalent of a supergroup like Asia, Audioslave, or Velvet Revolver. I would love to see more of this happen in brewing. I think it’s a great idea, and it shows good faith.

Hoppin Frog brews are great. I’ve had the Mean Manalishi Dbl IPA –
Great Stuff. I’m not big on Wheat brews myself, but, as an avid
BeerAdvocate, I’ve learned to appreciate the style (just don’t ask
me to brew one!).

For me, I’m not a huge Mexican fan but Lushie has been craving it big time. She drives me nuts when we go out to eat at one of these places and we’ll come home with 3 containers of food left over. The best italian comes from those hole in the wall mom and pop places. I’d like to find a good German or Polish place to eat around Pittsburgh. Though I have to laugh when I look back at growing up in Erie and the establishments I’d frequent. I swear everything is deep fried! I do have a soft spot for greek dogs when I go back home though.

The pictures that accompany this episode were hilarious – maybe your best yet. One question, though. Is Sick Puppy taking the piñata from behind? If so, please don’t hang that thing up for the kids. What a surprise that would be.

Great point you made about Mexican restaurants – even if it’s not always the case. Where I live, we have really authentic Mexican food, and more Mexican restaurants than I care to mention. The best of these restaurants have an all Mexican Spanish-speaking staff, and more importantly – not a chain. The food that is the most authentic is usually from Mom & Pop places – Jose’s Taco’s, or Anita’s Mexican Food. They’re holes in the wall, and they’ve been making the same food for years. They do it to death, so they’re really freakin’ good at it. By the same token, the best Italian food does not come from the Olive Garden – no offense to anyone.

I dig the ending music from the Tequila Mockingbirds. What’s the name of that song? I’ll get it from the iTunes store. Love that instrumental stuff.

I thought you guys were going to kiss each other in your multi-colored rainbow smocks. And by the time you finished, Father Spoon’s mustache had melted. Laughed my ass off.

Bill, you’re just the trouble maker now aren’t you the wedding was a blast and honestly I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Gotta support the SIDT family and I know for a fact that Dangeta had a great time getting hitched. I also made sure that Javahead always had a beverage in his hand. When Dangeta gets back we may have to bring them all over to Studio A.

Word on the street is that someone threw down a chug challenge to SickPuppy – one can of Ten Fiddy. I’m opposed to this idea, in many ways. So I had to speak out. Please don’t chug that beer. Friends don’t let friends chug craft beer.

And for the record, I’m pretty sure the wedding was worth it to Father Spoon.

Having attended the 1st session of the Erie Fest, I can say it was a HUGE success, with a much larger
crowd then last year’s initial event. The WORD is OUT … The BrewErie puts on a great event! 21
microbrewers were there, some with as many as 5 different brews, and some with only 2 (but 2 good
ones, such as Victory’s Prima Pils and Hop Devil, and Troegs Nugget Nectar and Troegenator). Like
last year, the crowd was well behaved and had a great time.

Cheers to all those connected with putting on this fine event. If you were there, you know what I’m
talking about. If you missed it, you’ll have a chance again next year … get your tickets early, as I’m
sure both sessions will sell out fast.

Hope that Wedding was worth missing this event Fr. Spoon!

Please DO NOT chug Ten Fiddy. Oskar Blues cans it’s beer, yes. And canned beer is finally shaking it’s sordid history. Just because it’s in cans does not mean it’s for chugging. Ten Fiddy is a top-class craft beer in my opinion. It’s a gift from the Craft Brew Gods. It was given to us to enjoy for it’s subtleties, for it’s character, for it’s strength and ability to stand up against other craft brews in it’s style class.

It is IMPERATIVE that we respect this beer, as we do all beers that don’t fall under the “lawnmower beer” category. If you want to chug a beer, make it something that lacks taste – Coor’s Light, Bud Light, (INSERT NAME HERE) Light. But not Ten Fiddy.

Please. I beg of you. Do it for me. Do it for Michael Jackson (the since deceased King of Beer, not the child molester).

Another enjoyable episode. Have to agree with you on the Dreadnaught … mediocre at best. At $10 a bomber, I’d rather get 2 Stone Ruinations for the same money. Can’t comment on the Oskar Blues, as they don’t seem to distribute to Ohio … yet. Besides, I already have picked out my 3 favorite 3 Russian Imperials: Stone Imperial Russian Stout, Victory Storm King, Great Lakes Blackout Stout. (and I can get all three easily!)

Since you are both getting into home brewing, we’ll have more to chat about at the BrewErie MicroBrew fest come April 19th. I don’t brew myself, but am a student of homebrewing (meaning I’ve studied the process extensively, should I ever decide I need yet another hobby).

I’m still working on Fr. Spoon’s challenge. It will involve fresh hops and beer … and perhaps a ‘frisky’ Irish drinking song.

Spoon, it’s Oscar Season. Why do you go to stupid-assed popcorn movies like National Treasure 2? If you’re going to endure the HELL that is the theater, at least see something worth watching. And dude, you’re dead on with the rant about commercials before the movie. It’s not bad enough that they’re making us pay $8 or $9 for a matinée, but we have to sit through commercials and 20 trailers too? This is why I say buy the biggest screen you can afford, hook up a decent sound system, and wait for the DVD.

Just listened to Ep. 30 and enjoyed it. Thanks for the ‘shout out’ and for picking up on my “Chillada Challenge”. Nice of you to review the “Elf” series, since I’d not had any of them myself. Of course, if I spy a new beer and I want to get some background on it, I always give it a quick check at the BeerAdvocate.com site, since you can find reviews for even the most mundane and obscure brews there.

The beer sounds like a real hit, especially the Euphoria from DuClaw. Toffee Nut Brown – I love the thought of that, and wow it sounded delicious. I think the girls would dig that beer. And it’s interesting to learn that Father Spoon doesn’t like coffee. I think Groucho doesn’t like coffee either. You guys are weird.

Once again, Sick Puppy coins a key phrase. And this one should be a mantra for all beer shows, and maybe even a name for a new one — “Shut up and drink it, bitch!”

I have to say that the best beer I had that day was the Rocky River Hop Goblin IPA. Perfect amount of hops, perfect body and well I can’t mention the head since it was in a sampler glass. I think we may be making a road trip to see these guys!

Flying Dog was hands down the most fun all day with doing an interview. Brad was a great guy and full of energy. There were a few brewers there that were a complete turnoff because they were either boring or you could tell didn’t want to be there. Honestly I’ll probably drink more Flying Dog after talking to him.

Man, you guys hit a lot of different brewers there. It’s great to hear that there was such a diverse collection of beers and styles that were available there.

Brad from Flying Dog Brewery was hilarious. He let the F-Bombs fly, huh? I’ve never heard a representative of a brewery with a potty mouth like that. Sign me up! That dude really liked you guys, you can tell. That was so cool. Good Beer, no shit. I love it. That’s the kind of energy every brewery should have at these things.

I have every right to bitch about my Buccos because after 14 years of bullshit its deserved. When you see every year the cheap ass ownership screw it’s fans by putting a lack of effort into fielding a decent team you just wanna choke someone. I see this because I live in Pittsburgh so I’m up on all of the news that doesn’t make it nation wide. On paper the Pirates look like a hapless franchise of scrubs. Reality is that once a player is developed the Pirates trade him away for fear of paying him the money and bring in scrub talent.

As for O&A I think what happened to them is bullshit. Banning them for a month on XM goes to show that the advertising of free talking radio is bullshit. The fact that they are still on CBS is what chaps me. so I PAY for your service to have them taken away and yet I can listen on Free FM? I don;t think of them as Stern wannabes because really, once you make a name for yourself everyone else is considered a knock off or wannabe. What i love about the O&A show is that they never have to resort to cheap sex to get listeners. Yeah they drop the F bomb a lot but the content of the show is for the most part really good. This is all bad news for sat. radio in general. Personally i can’t imagine living without XM but their downfall is the same as the dot com bust. They started spending money buying too much high priced talent and now it’s falling apart.

That whole Opie & Anthony thing is sad, because it’s not the same as what went down with Imus. It’s more promotional-based, I’m afraid. No one’s listening to those two knuckleheads. XM is on the ropes, as is Sirius. So they need the press, and they got it. Unfortunately, when they bring those two bozos back on the air, they’re not going to have any more listeners than they had before. They’re banking on the fact that people who didn’t know who these two morons were will suddenly start listening now that they know they’re controversial. They’re not Howard Stern, and it’s about time they just accept it. From what I hear, Sirius is having a hard time keeping the lights on too.

Listening to you guys chugging any Belgian beer is as horrifying as you doing the actual chug. You’re trained professionals, so I’ll leave that to you.

And it was refreshing to find out that Spoon’s into Jazz as well. I know it can be an acquired taste, and you can’t like it all, but there’s a ton of great music out there – old and new. I can’t seem to get enough of it.

I didn’t care for Hob Goblin in the bottle either. Anything in a clear bottle is asking for trouble, unless it rhymes with “Newcastle.” And I thought I heard a rumor that Newcastle doesn’t skunk because they use hop extract, which isn’t as affected by light as whole or pellet hops. Anyway, glad it redeemed itself in the can.

I found that if one removes the bottom Kangaroo tube and substitutes a small/medium plastic kitchen funnel, spillage drops to zero and the whole stack is a little more stable.

I should probably clear up my lager comment after what you wrote made me realize what I said. I’ve had a few lager in my time but mostly the same brand. Not really a lager person besides Yuengling. The ones I have had though, have held the same consistency for color and head.

I think we’ll have to do a Lager show now. That’s one thing that i love about doing these reviews is hands on education. Thanks for the heads up BuBBy. Knew there was a reason we keep you around

Something to point out when Father Spoon was commenting his Lager was light in color. The color of a beer isn’t dependent if its a Lager or and Ale. The difference between a Lager and an Ale is the type of yeast and the temperatures used during fermentation. Lagering uses yeast that works at a lower temperature. This results in fermentation taking longer compared to an Ale giving it a different flavor. All this is in general. People do all sorts of wacky stuff like lagering with Ale yeast and brewing with lager yeast at Ale temperatures, etc. The color comes from how the barley is roasted.

Anyway, excellent show I enjoyed it greatly. Anxiously waiting for the next one.
