As far as the BJCP goes, who cares? I think it’s a great way to define beer styles but I never understood those who define their recipes by the definition of what it should be. If this was the standard rule, we would not have most of the great craft beers produced today. I for one, prefer to draw outside the lines and put creativity and a personal stamp on my brews. Not to take away from BJCP definition only brewers, I respect that. Just don’t follow that path myself.

Great point, Puppy. Glad you guys liked it too. I think their beers are spectacular and it’s great to see seriously upscale British beers joining the mix. I LOVE British beer.

Odd that Meantime would make a robust porter, then call it a London porter. London porters are generally brown porters; a bit less of everything, and less than 6% abv (see Fuller’s London Porter). I guess they could call it an Imperial London Porter (why not .. .I’ve even seen Imperial Milds!)

I would rather see styles brewed to BJCP guidelines, otherwise you wind up with beers with no style at all, and the flavors are all ‘muddied’. I could give you an example of a Pa. brewpub, but will hold my tongue. Yes, there will always be those that push the envelope .. that’s fine by me. There are also styles that are “catch all” styles; e.g. “American Strong Ale” Lots of breweries wind up entering their brews into different categories, so that they more closely match up to the BJCP guidelines.

As for Black IPA’s, yinzers are behind the times. In the latest Brew Your Own mag, a proposal has been sent to BJCP and GABF people proposing guidelines for just such a beer. The name Cascadian Ale has been bantered about, as well as Black IPA. I expect it to be accepted, as those leading the charge on it are pretty heavy hitters (Charlie Papazian). Also, quite a few breweries are now making Black IPAs.

Maybe I’ll make a quick run to Boardman and buy out all the Meantime stuff .. just to be MEAN this TIME.

The BJCP notes both Meantime London Porter and the Fuller’s London Porter as examples of a robust porter. So at least the BJCP considers them both robust porters. We can debate this all day long. Bottom line for me is I respect the BJCP as far as defining styles, just think it limits creativity in brewing if one sticks with the BJCP definitions. No one is right or wrong here, its all in what one prefers. This is a debate that no one side will ever prevail as it’s all a matter of opinion.
