  1. olllllo Said,

I’m really happy that you liked the beer that I sent and loved your comments. I wanted to send you something unique that you can’t get in PA and it looks as though I nailed it. I’d rather send someone an interesting and new beer that brings discussion rather than a good or even great safe beer.

So even knowing that the Cordillera Blanca was BA “C” beer, I felt pretty good knowing that you would give it an honest evaluation and take it for what it’s worth. And after all, who is making an A or B White Chocolate Ale these days???

Sonoran is not my favorite brewery here, but they have made a unique beer and they should be recognized for it.

Gimme a shout if you get out to the AZ. I’ll be out in your area sometime in the next year, so we’ll have to tip a few.

  2. sickpuppy Said,

    olllllo,
Thanks for the reply and thank you once again for the beers, they were all incredible representations of several different styles. You’re cream ale was top notch, is that recipe up on homebrewtalk?
If I ever make it out west I will be sure to stop by! Definitely let us know when you hit up the Pittsburgh area!

  3. Phil Said,

Fun to hear you guys recording again. And thanks for remembering Dom DeLouise.

Now that he’s “up there” my mother is undoubtedly in stitches again. She loved Dom. He epitomized the Italian/American for her. When I was in college, I made it a point to visit my mother every Tuesday for a “movie night.” I would pick up Chinese food, pizza, whatever, stop at the video store, and rent a movie for us to watch after dinner. Once I rented “Fatso” and it became our favorite movie to watch together. We’d see it more than any other. I think we may have seen it 12 times together. And she laughed just as hard every time, as if she was watching it for the first time ever.

Dom loved his food, his wine, and his friends equally as much as he loved his family – and that’s saying something. I have both of his “Eat This, it will make you feel better” cookbooks on my cookbook rack. His Grandmother’s Sunday Gravy is in there, and it’s worth the price of admission, trust me.

Those recipes do truly make you feel better, and I think we all need that now more than ever.

    Happy 3rd Anniversary, SIDT!

  4. Madison Bill Said,

How do you know when Spuhn has been away from SIDT and beer for too long a period? He starts raving
about a Mexican Barleywine! I’ve had Mexican beers: Modello, Tecate, Dos Equis, et.al., and they all
remind me (at best) of BMC products .. which says it all I think. Not exactly the right time of year to be
sipping Barleywines anyway … better for Hop 15 and such. I’m still drinking up my last batch of IPA, which is
drinking real good right now. I bottled a British mild (2.5%abv) last weekend, and will likely bottle my
Am. Amber this weekend (6%abv). Also still have a CASE of SA Impy Pils left from my big buy late last
Fall … those are like nectar of the gods right now.

Wasn’t aware of Dom Deluise’s passing until you mentioned it. He was really a funny guy, especially
when hooked up with other comedians (e.g. Jackie Gleason).

Glad to hear that teaspuhn is now ‘wireless’. A big relief I’m sure. Now all you have to contend with
are the messy I/O issues for another 2 years. 8-D

Hey, you guys (Doug & Brad) still on the dole, or have you become gainfully employed yet? If not,
how do you keep yourself busy?

After I bottle my Am. Amber, I’m thinking of doing a Stone IRS clone of my own making. It will be an AG
affair, using my 70 Qt. mash tun, and 30 lbs of grain. Going for 1st runnings only with an OG around
1.095. It would be ready for Fall consumption, for sure.

Cheers, and Happy Anniversary. Hope to see some of your listeners up at BOTB in July!

    Madison Bill

  5. Father Spoon Said,

olllllo, wait till you hear part 2. that’s all I have to say :)

Phil, I loved Dom. Being a Smokey and the Bandit fan of course I think Smokey 2 was his best role but I can’t let Cannonball Run go without a thumbs up. He always came across as a really fun guy to be around.

Bill, right now we’re planning on attending the afternoon BOTB 2 this summer. That weekend is hella busy for me in Erie so I’m going to unleash sickpuppy unsupervised on the city while I attend to a couple functions. Teaspoon has already unleashed his fury on the I/O and it isnt pretty.

Here is my view on Mexican beers since this show. Outside of North America some people think Miller, Bud and Coors represent American beer when you and I both know of the multitude of breweries and styles. I think this is what’s happening to Mexico. There are probably good breweries down there, we just don’t know of them on this side of the country because of the commercialization of dos equis, Brahma and that urine sample Corona.

Just wait for part 2 of this… we have a special guest stopping in for the first time since we started.

    Cheers yinz guys!

  6. olllllo Said,

If I’m not mistaken, the Brewmaster at Cucapa studied under Tomme Arthur.

    Nothing wrong with that pedigree.

Cucapa distributes almost exclusively in SoCal and Phoenix.

The BW did amazingly well at Toronado last time ’round.

I think their APA is spot on, but the others are not as shining.

Nothing wrong with Negra Modelo either, after all it is an exemplar of the Vienna Lager style.

  7. sickpuppy Said,

    olllllo,
I actually drink Negra Modelo Dark every now and then when I dine out at our local Mexican restaurants, not a bad beer at all. I’d be interested in finding more Cucapa in the future, the barleywine was great!

  8. Madison Bill Said,

No offense, but I’ll have me a Great Lake’s Elliot Ness over a Negro Modelo, every time, every day
of the year. Elliot Ness is the definitive Vienna Lager. Just not a contest at all. I would compare
Negro Modelo to Beck’s dark; which means its probably better than most everything that Yuengling makes.
(and I’ve tried everything they make too!). I’ll be at the afternoon session of BOTB, so will likely see
yinzas there. Going to wear my “St. Obnoxious” sticker I got at last year’s event, which says:
“Drink ’til you want me!”. I was hoping to get a tee-shirt with that saying on it for the BOTB event, but will
probably wear one of my beer shirts.

    Later dudes …

  9. Father Spoon Said,

I hope there are BOTB shirts this year and that they have XXL. I love beer fest shirts and that always seems to be a lacking feature.

Last year I got a shirt from Jimmy Z’s in Wesleyville that reads “I ate a Fat Chick and LOVED it! at Jimmy Z’s!”

  10. Hutch Said,

I finally got around to catching the show, Mexican Barleywine..hmmm. Don’t forget I have the military special straight bourbon whiskey aging in the BEV lounge. Do you guys know the 3 son’s guys well enough for me to drop it off there sometime ? I really want to see yinz filter it. I started drinking martini’s every now and then and filtering affordable ($12 750ml haha) gin is a regular chore here at the lounge!

  11. Father Spoon Said,

We havent filtered in almost a year which amazes me. I’ll talk to puppy about a dropoff. He’ll have a lot of free time on his hands soon. 3 total of your finest SIDT staff members will be laid off by this time next week.

i still think filtering Gin is a sin. me loves some gin. mmmmmm

  12. Esther Said,

I really enjoyed the podcast. I’ll try to find that Cerveza Cucapa here in Texas or in nearby Mexico. It seemed you guys really enjoyed it, and I’m curious about it, too.

    Congratulations on three years!

  13. Father Spoon Said,

Thanks Esther! If you can find some stock up. good times in a bottle
