Things we learned
Because you’re uneducated on alcohol doesn’t mean that the “community” has to coddle your children. If you get worked up about a video we make… disconnect from the internet and kill yourself. The Pens need SIDT as advisers for craft beer selection at the new arena.

Glad to hear you guys enjoyed the beers as much as you did. Damn, I brewed those so long ago, I have new batches of both beers on tap here now. The Clarkeweizen is far better, and the Black Cat Stout is closer to Stone’s Imperial Russian Stout, with a really rich hop aroma. I will send more beers soon. Thanks for the great PR.
Sick, I really want to taste your Flatulent Monk Belgian Ale. Send me a bottle. I’m a sucker for Belgians. Can’t wait to see the new label from Barnett.
I really like Alaskan’s Summer Ale, but not a big fan of the Amber. But I guess leaving it around for nearly a year is the key. I’ll try that next time. Maybe I should buy some more of it and promise to send it to you. Then, sometime next Spring I’ll open the box and drink it myself. That must be the key.
Collaboration Not Litigation is everything that is right with the craft brewing industry. Further proof that great brewers set the standard NOT to be total dicks. Having Avery and Russian River Brewing in the same bottle is the equivalent of a supergroup like Asia, Audioslave, or Velvet Revolver. I would love to see more of this happen in brewing. I think it’s a great idea, and it shows good faith.
Great show, dudes. Thanks for the love.
Thanks for sending the beers Phil! the Collaboration Not Litigation could go down as one of my favorite beers ever. Yes folks, it was THAT good.
I can’t believe you said Asia… freak
Fuck you, I’m old. At least I admit it.
Hey guys, another great show. You’re right about the Pens. I’ll be a Wings fan ’till the day I die, but the Penguins really impressed me with their determination and guts. I’ll be surprised if they’re not right in the thick of it next year. At least I hope so, because we got some more love for ya here in Hockeytown!
Phil, I’m not old. remember
WannaTiki, I won’t hold being a wings fan against you. In fact with the way the CBA is for the NHL it wouldnt shock me to see these 2 teams back in it. Though, you may need some walkers by the time the finals come around
Sick Puppy! Glad your experimental Flatulent Monk worked out for you. If your OG was only around 1.050,
and you used a yeast with typical attenuation of about 72%, your FG would likely be around 1.012-1.014,
which would put the ABV at approx 4.7% … good session brew. Black Patent malt should always be used
sparingly; no more than 4 to 6 oz. per batch. You mentioned your efficiency was low … what was the temp
of your strike water? What temp did you mash in at? How long? Did you sparge or rinse? (I’m betting you
did a rinse if anything). Also, if you knew your OG was low (take a sample with 15 min. left in boil, and do a
rapid cool in an ice bath to keep your hydrometer happy), you could have added some dextrin, corn syrup,
or honey to ‘kick it up a notch’. Consider using DME instead of LME next time, which will give you a much
higher OG. LME adds 34 gravity points per pound per gallon, while DME adds 43 gravity points per pound
per gallon .. big difference. Oh well, enough brew talk.
So, you don’t like Killer Penquin? I can’t believe it! Had ‘on tap’ during the “Ogre Fest” days at the
Brew Kettle in Strongsville, OH. It’s a terrific barleywine (check out it’s ratings on BA). On the day we
went, it was my buddy’s and my top pick out of 10 samples.
Enjoyed the show …. Cheers from Ohio
Bill
I can’t speak for sickpuppy but I freaking HATED the Killer Penguin.
Thanks Bill, it turned out to be quite an enjoyable beer. I did a partial mash on this one, my temps were spot on
I did top off due to some loss, should have ran that through the mash as well.
and held well. I did rinse (5 gallon cooler). I did not have the extra ingredients on hand that particular day so kicking it up a notch was out of the question
My second attempt at this recipe will be much better, this one was just a jacked up brewing day. I even had to drive back to the homebrew shop after I got started because they shorted me a lb 2-row. I hated the Killer Penguin as well
but I must admit I want to revisit this brew!
CHEERS Bill!
P.S. - your winnings are on the way!!
